No Reddit API needed

DataLens reads the Reddit page as displayed in Chrome — no OAuth, no developer app registration, no rate limits to manage.

Real-world use cases

A product manager studying customer pain points extracts the top 200 posts from the subreddit for their product category, sorts by upvote score, and reads the 20 highest-voted posts — discovering the vocabulary customers naturally use to describe their frustrations, feeding directly into the product roadmap and marketing positioning.

A content marketer building a thought leadership strategy exports Reddit search results for their target topic keywords, analyzes the post titles with the highest engagement, and uses the patterns to write blog headlines and article formats that the audience has already demonstrated they want to read.

An NLP researcher collects comment data from multiple subreddits discussing a shared topic to build a diverse, real-world training corpus — without the API rate limits and approval process that Reddit's paid API now requires.

How it works

  1. 1

Open Reddit in Chrome and navigate to a subreddit feed (e.g., reddit.com/r/entrepreneur), a Reddit search results page, or an individual post thread with its comment section. For post-level extraction, the subreddit feed or search results page is the starting point; for comment extraction, open the specific post.

  2. 2

Open DataLens from the Chrome toolbar. Click on a post card to map post-level fields (title, upvote score, comment count, flair, author, timestamp), or click on a comment to map comment fields (author, text, upvote score, timestamp). DataLens shows a column preview before capturing any data.

  3. 3

Scroll down to load more posts or expand collapsed comment threads. Reddit uses infinite scroll for feeds and threaded pagination for comments. When you have collected the records you need, click Export and download as CSV, Excel (XLSX), or JSON.

Frequently asked questions

These are the most common questions teams ask before using DataLens for this workflow.

What Reddit data can I extract?

From subreddit feeds and search results you can extract post titles, flair, upvote scores, comment counts, author usernames, subreddit names, and post timestamps. From individual post threads you can extract full comment text, commenter usernames, upvote scores, timestamps, and reply depth — including nested reply threads when expanded.

Can I scrape Reddit without API access?

Yes. DataLens reads Reddit pages as rendered in your Chrome browser — no API keys or developer registration required. This is particularly valuable now that Reddit has significantly increased API pricing, making the research API impractical for independent developers and small-scale researchers.

Can I extract nested Reddit comments?

Yes. DataLens detects the nested comment structure on Reddit post pages. To capture deep reply threads, click 'load more comments' links on the page to expand collapsed threads before exporting — this ensures the expanded content is rendered and visible for DataLens to capture.

Can I export Reddit data to Excel?

Yes. Export any Reddit extraction as CSV, Excel (XLSX), or JSON with a single click. Post or comment data downloads with clean column headers and is ready for analysis in any spreadsheet, BI tool, or text analysis pipeline.
